Breathing a Sigh Relief for Anxious Pets

Anxiety is an umbrella term for many different anxieties.

Anxiety to one person is not the same to another, the same for our furry friends.

There are general anxieties, separation anxiety, even panic attacks can be seen during thunderstorms or fireworks.

Anxiety can have many causes, including trauma, pain, aging related weakness, genetics, separation, and a lack of socializing.

Symptoms vary too. Pacing, panting, cowering or hiding, whining, excessive barking, overgrooming… are all signs of anxiety.

The good news is that even with a variety of causes and and symptoms, all anxieties share a common cause.

At its core, anxiety is fear.

An easy way to release the physical tension that goes with fear is to breathe.

Yes… simply breathe. Exhale. Inhale. Repeat.

Just like people, anxious animals tend to breathe fast and shallow. Some even hold their breath.

And, just like people, relaxed, slower, deeper breathing eases anxiety. That’s why meditation’s become so popular.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could teach our pets to meditate? But let’s face it...many of us rely on our pets to relieve our stress or anxiety. (Another cause of anxiety in pets, btw.)

Watching our anxious fur babies is stressful on us too. Thankfully, there's a way to help them (and us) at the same time.

Essential oils! One inhalation calms the body, and mind, in less than 1 second!

There are many essential oils that promote relaxation for dogs and cats. A few good ones are Bergamot, Lavender, Cedarwood and Balsam Fir.

During thunderstorms or fireworks, when extra calming is needed, it's more effective to combine sedative oils like Valerian and/or Roman Chamomile with grounding oils such as Angelica Root or Vetiver.

For an extra boost of courage or confidence try adding Ylang Ylang or Orange.

Remember the safety guidelines for using essential oils with our pets- ASK, let them choose, and DILUTE! (Use extra dilution and caution with cats and DO NOT apply topically.)

Don't forget Ear Slides. No essential oils required. There are several acupressure points in the ears that affect breathing and the nervous system, perfect for easing anxiety.  If you forgot how, check out this video demo with Jake.
